A restaurant owner in Texas was forced to sell off her business after suffering repeated break-ins from illegal immigrants crossing the border via the Lone Star State.
Selena Buentello Price was the second generation owner of local barbecue joint The Wagon Wheel in Eagle Pass, Texas. During the restaurant’s 25 years in business, which had her working alongside her father for 19 years, it had only been broken in once.
“From February [2022] to now, I’ve had five,” she said. “Not only has my business been broken into and ransacked. It’s just the insecurity now, you don’t feel safe at home anymore.”
“I’m so scared that they’re going to steal something that was a family heirloom of mine and depreciate the value even more by rummaging through my stuff and breaking that building. So, I decided to finally sell my family business.”
Price lamented that Eagle Pass had been “completely overrun” by illegal aliens, adding: “What I had that I valued – that not only had sentimental value, but had actual monetary value – has depreciated thanks to the mess, the trash [and] the vandalism.”
According to the business owner, a processing facility for illegal immigrants was to blame for the issue.
“Two locations down from our original location, our smokehouse and our honky-tonk, we have this facility that assists in processing all these immigrants coming in. Once they are processed — I literally see busloads on a daily basis — they’re just released, and they find sanctuary in anything that’s abandoned or not.”
Price remarked that illegal aliens arriving in Eagle Pass often look for shelter and supplies in vacant buildings – with The Wagon Wheel being a frequent stop. She reached her breaking point when she encountered an intruder on her property one evening. The business owner called law enforcement, but the trespasser had already fled by the time officers arrived.
According to Customs and Border Protection, Texas’ Del Rio Sector – which includes Eagle Pass – has admitted more than 375,000 illegal immigrants since October 2021
Even though Price sold off The Wagon Wheel to a new owner, she still continues to experience problems with illegal aliens. According to her, illegal aliens have also encroached on her 126-acre ranch in Eagle Pass.
“‘I’ve got pictures of our game cams catching more immigrants than I did wildlife,” she said.
“Years prior to this opening of the borders, we used to see maybe five [illegal] immigrants in a month. As soon as those borders opened, there was movement every single day.”
Illegal immigrants have also forced Price to sell off her livestock. The border crossers frequently cut her fences as they moved, allowing her horses and cattle to escape their enclosures.
“I was forced because I couldn’t maintain my fences quick enough,” she lamented.
Price admitted that she and her 29-year-old daughter keep firearms in their bedrooms due to the number of illegal aliens regularly crossing her ranch.
“You’re worried because you think of the worst-case scenarios, and that takes your peace. Our security as we know it is gone.”
The business owner’s statement contradicted earlier remarks by Vice President Kamala Harris, who claimed the southern border was secure. (Related: Busloads of illegal migrants show up at VP Harris’ DC residence days after she claimed the border is ‘secure.’)
“We have a secure border [and] that is a priority for any nation, including ours and our administration,” Harris said. She also accused the Lone Star State and Republican lawmakers in Congress of “playing politics.”
