Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas claims the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is not responsible for the August 2023 murder of a Maryland mother by an illegal alien.
During an interview with CNN, the secretary rejected accusations that his department played a role in the murder by allowing 23-year-old Salvadoran national Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez into the country. Instead, he claimed that illegals like Hernandez do not statistically commit more crimes than native-born Americans.
Hernandez allegedly raped and killed Maryland mother Rachel Morin along a hiking trail near her home. Police later apprehended Hernandez in Tulsa, Oklahoma and charged him with first-degree murder and first-degree rape. According to law enforcement, the suspect reportedly hid in a drainage culvert and attacked Morin while she was walking.
Deputies from Harford County are working to extradite Hernandez to Maryland, which could take 30 to 60 days. Maryland State’s Attorney Alison Healey will be the prosecutor on the case, said Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler.
According to the sheriff, Hernandez had crossed the border into the U.S. in February 2023 after being issued an arrest warrant for the murder of a young woman in El Salvador the previous month. In March 2023, investigators said he had assaulted a nine-year-old girl and her mother at a home in Los Angeles.
Gahler also noted that Hernandez has connections in the Washington, D.C. area, in both Virginia and Prince George’s County, Maryland. He also has ties to known gangs.
“Hernandez did not come here to make a better life for himself or his family. He came here to escape the crime he committed in El Salvador,” the sheriff said. “He came here and murdered Rachel and, God willing, no one else. Hopefully, he’ll never have the opportunity to walk free again.”
But Gahler’s wish for the Salvadoran murderer to stay behind bars for good might remain just that. In another instance, the Biden administration released an illegal from Peru reportedly wanted for murdering 23 people in his home country back in May.
According to a separate report by the National Pulse, officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Gianfranco Torres-Navarro, 38, in Endicott, New York. Peruvian authorities claimed he is the leader of the criminal organization “Los Killers,” which specializes in contract killings and extortion. Torres-Navarro had been let loose among American citizens by the Biden-Harris government on May 16 after illegally crossing into Texas.
“Torres-Navarro poses a significant threat to our communities,” commented Thomas Brophy, director of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations field office in Buffalo. “We won’t allow New York [state] to be a haven for dangerous noncitizens.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) also reacted to Torres-Navarro’s arrest: “It should alarm every American that a Peruvian gang leader, who has murdered 23 people, crossed our border and was released into the country. The Biden-Harris administration’s open border policies are terrorizing our communities.
However, many Democratic officials in the Empire State refuse to cooperate with ICE. New York Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Patrol John Chell recently expressed frustration at dealing with two migrants accused of raping a woman in Brooklyn. One of them had been released from jail despite a previous arrest for a shelter rape.
Mayor Eric Adams blamed the city’s sanctuary laws for the situation, saying: “Laws do not allow us to coordinate with ICE. That’s the law. And, you know I’m not happy about that.” (Related: Mayor Eric Adams calls for modifications to sanctuary city policy as NYC struggles to accommodate nearly 200,000 new migrants that are overrunning the city.)
