Border czar Tom Homan has pushed back against Pope Francis for criticizing the United States’ strict border security and deportation efforts, highlighting the Vatican’s double standards on the matter.
Homan, who described himself as a lifelong Catholic, lambasted the pontiff’s stance on immigration in remarks made to Newsweek on Tuesday, Feb. 11. He pointed to the Holy See’s own strict border polices and the presence of a border wall to highlight its hypocrisy in criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump.
“I got harsh words for the Pope,” Homan began with his signature no-nonsense approach. “He ought to fix the Catholic Church and concentrate on his work and leave border enforcement to us.”
“He wants to attack us for securing our border? He’s got a wall around the Vatican, does he not? So, he’s got a wall around to protect his people and himself, but we can’t have a wall around the United States?”
The Vatican’s own strict border controls and security measures have long been a point of contention for critics of the Pope’s stance on immigration. The Vatican, a sovereign city-state within Rome, maintains its own border security and immigration policies, including a wall surrounding the papal states. The border czar and former acting director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement pointed out this contradiction as an example of the pontiff’s hypocrisy. Homan’s response to the pontiff, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, highlights the double standard in the Vatican’s stance on border security. While the Pope criticizes the United States for its deportation efforts and strict border controls, the Vatican maintains its own strict border policies and security measures.
The border czar’s comments to Newsweek followed Francis’ letter to American Catholic bishops, made public on Tuesday. “The rightly formed conscience cannot fail to make a critical judgment and express its disagreement with any measure that tacitly or explicitly identifies the illegal status of some migrants with criminality,” the pope said in his letter.
“What is built on the basis of force, and not on the truth about the equal dignity of every human being, begins badly and will end badly,” Francis continued, ostensibly referring to Trump’s mass deportation efforts.
Homan wasn’t alone in his criticism, however, as others who back Trump’s border security agenda have also spoken out. Vice President J.D. Vance, another Catholic, has been vocal about his concerns over the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ involvement in resettling illegal immigrants.
This was not the first time the Holy See has challenged Trump’s approach on immigration. The pontiff has been critical of the 47th U.S. president’s policies since the start of his first term, with Francis calling Trump’s proposal to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border “not Christian” in 2016. This criticism only intensified when Trump began his second term last month.
As the second Trump administration continues to implement its strict border security policies, it remains to be seen how the Vatican’s criticism will impact the ongoing debate over immigration and border control. However, one thing is clear: Homan’s response to the Pope’s criticism has brought the issue of border security into the spotlight, challenging the Vatican’s own policies.
