New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced an emergency order (EO) to deal with the surge of border crossers after Title 42 expired on May 11.
Hochul issued the EO on May 9, two days before the scheduled expiry of the public health order. According to Just The News, the EO seeks to help both Albany and New York City (NYC) deal with the influx of illegal immigrants. The order will be effective until June 8, the outlet added.
The May 9 edict by Hochul gives the Empire State “greater flexibility” to divert resources to cities and towns to support migrants. Both the state and municipal governments will be authorized to quickly purchase necessary supplies and resources, including food and equipment.
It also authorizes the state to deploy more National Guard members to provide “logistical and operational support.” The governor said her order will authorize the deployment of an additional 500 Guardsmen, bringing the total number deployed to about 1,500.
“Upon the expiration of the Title 42 order, it is anticipated there will be a surge of migration into the U.S. – resulting in the imminent arrival of individuals to the city and state of New York at an increased rate of what is expected to be several thousand additional people seeking shelter each week,” Hochul wrote. She added that “the arrival of increased numbers of migrants … [will] exacerbate an already large-scale humanitarian crisis and create a disaster emergency, to which local governments are unable to adequately respond.” (Related: Absurd: NYC spends over $10M each day for illegals.)
“Even with the Title 42 order in place, large numbers of migrants with immediate housing and service needs have arrived in the city and state of New York over the last several months,” noted the governor. NYC alone is currently sheltering 36,738 migrants – with this number rising by 12,279 since January and by 1,578 the week before Hochul declared the EO.
“Federal support is critical to support NYC and other local governments within the state that lack the infrastructure, facilities and resources necessary to meet the immediate humanitarian demand to house and meet other basic needs of the large numbers of migrant arrivals,” Hochul remarked.
But Washington, D.C. appears to turn a deaf ear to the pleas of Albany. In the meantime, lawmakers at the New York State Legislature have allocated more than $1 billion in the budget for fiscal year 2024 to help the Big Apple support migrants.
Over 50,000 migrants have traveled to NYC in the past year, impacting the city’s ability to provide essential services. To address the issue, the city has set up temporary relief centers, including one at a cruise ship terminal in Brooklyn, to house more than 30,000 illegal immigrants.
According to NYC Mayor Eric Adams, the Big Apple will spend more than $4 billion to provide housing, health care and other assistance for border crossers over the next two fiscal years. NYC is expected to get about $1.8 billion from both the state and federal governments.
Republicans in New York have blasted the Biden administration for not doing enough to address the border crisis ahead of Title 42’s lifting. But in a rare instance of clarity, Adams also joined in the fray and denounced the White House for its lack of action on the matter.
“It is the irresponsibility of the GOP in Washington for refusing to do real immigration reform, and it’s the irresponsibility of the White House for not addressing the problem,” he said. The NYC mayor also lamented how his city “is being destroyed by the migrant crisis.”
